Fiji
Fiji is the South Pacific with its arms open: 300-plus islands, water warm enough to live in, soft coral reefs that divers cross the planet for, and a welcome ('Bula!') that guests consistently rank the warmest in world travel. The resort scene splits between convenient Denarau near the airport, the postcard Mamanuca and Yasawa islets offshore, and remote dive hideaways on Vanua Levu. Family-friendliness is a Fijian superpower: the nanny and kids'-club culture here embarrasses most of the Caribbean.

Sweet spot. May–October: dry, mid-80s, and aligned with northern-summer holidays; rainy season runs November–April, wettest January–March.
Storm risk. South Pacific cyclone season runs November–April; hits are occasional rather than annual, but it's the half of the year to insure.
Figures are long-term climate normals for Nadi / Denarau, good for planning. They are not a forecast.
Denarau, the Mamanucas, or beyond?
Denarau Island, 20 minutes from Nadi's airport, is the convenience hub: a gated strip of familiar big resorts, golf, and the marina where island boats depart. The Mamanucas (and the wilder Yasawas beyond) are the brochure Fiji: small islands, house reefs, barefoot luxury 1–3 hours by catamaran. Vanua Levu and Taveuni, to the northeast, are the dive frontier: the Somosomo Strait's soft corals are world-list material.
A classic itinerary pairs a Denarau night on either end with an island stay in the middle; boat schedules make same-day international connections tight.
How 'all-inclusive' works in Fiji
Many island resorts run genuine all-inclusive or near-it meal plans out of necessity (you can't leave for dinner), while Denarau properties price rooms and meals separately. Read the plan: some include boat transfers, village trips, and non-motorized water sports; others gate them. The remote the island, the more the plan tends to include.
Kids' clubs and nannies deserve their reputation: several resorts include full-day children's programs and inexpensive dedicated nannies, making Fiji arguably the world's easiest long-haul family beach trip.
When to go
May–October is the dry season (mid-80s, low humidity, the surest skies) and aligns with North American summer for families. November–April is hotter, stickier, and wetter, with cyclone season a real (if occasional) factor; it's also when deals appear.
Water sits between 79–84°F all year; diving visibility peaks in the dry months.

Getting there & around
Nadi has nonstops from Los Angeles, San Francisco, and the West Coast plus Australia/NZ (about 11 hours from LAX, made friendlier by the overnight timing). Onward travel is by catamaran (Mamanucas/Yasawas), small plane, or seaplane; resorts arrange everything.
You'll cross the date line; build the lost day into the itinerary math.
Good to know
English is official and universal. Tipping isn't customary; many resorts pool a 'staff Christmas fund' instead. Village visits ask modest dress and a small kava gift; your resort will brief you. Power is 240V with Australian-style plugs. Reef-safe sunscreen matters here more than almost anywhere; you're swimming over living coral.

Frequently asked questions
Is Fiji all-inclusive like the Caribbean?
On the outer islands, often effectively yes: meal-plan-inclusive resorts are the norm where there's nowhere else to eat, and many fold in activities. Denarau's big resorts price à la carte. Check each property's plan; our resort pages break down what's actually included.
When is cyclone season in Fiji?
November through April. Direct hits are occasional rather than annual, but it's the wetter, riskier half of the year; May–October is the reliable window.
Is Fiji good for kids?
Exceptional: full-day kids' clubs, affordable nannies, calm lagoons, and a culture that adores children. It's the best family value proposition in the South Pacific.
