December–April is a useful starting window when comparing the drier part of the year. Rain can still interrupt a winter stay; wetter conditions generally build from May into autumn. Compare actual package prices for your dates rather than assuming a shoulder month will always be cheaper.
Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1–November 30, with occasional storms outside those dates. Check forecasts and local instructions near departure; the monthly chart is a planning guide, not a forecast for your week.
Sargassum arrivals vary with ocean and weather conditions. There is no reliable April–August cutoff or guaranteed cleaner resort area. Check dated monitoring reports and recent conditions at the specific hotel; guest photos show a past moment, not your future stay.

Hotel Zone, Costa Mujeres, or Isla Mujeres?
Choose the Hotel Zone if access to Cancún's restaurants, shops and nightlife is a priority, but check the distance from your particular hotel. Costa Mujeres and Playa Mujeres are worth comparing for a stay centered on the resort; verify transport for any off-site plans. Isla Mujeres adds a separate island journey, so weigh that against the arrival and departure times of your flights.
The Hotel Zone includes beaches with different exposure to waves; it is not one uniformly sheltered or north-facing beach. Ask about swimming directly in front of your hotel, and follow the day's flags and lifeguard instructions. Do not assume an island or a resort farther north guarantees calmer water.
Plan your airport and island transfer
Cancún International (CUN) is the airport to start with for Cancún, Costa Mujeres and Playa Mujeres. Ask for a drive estimate to the exact hotel and for your arrival time, including any shared-shuttle stops. Immigration, baggage collection and waiting for the vehicle are additional to the drive.
For an Isla Mujeres stay, confirm the mainland pier, ferry departure and onward journey to the hotel. Compare the scheduled public ferry with any transfer your resort offers, and check what your package includes. Allow a buffer on the return journey; a ferry crossing is only one part of the airport transfer.
Beyond the resort
Mix a beach week with an outing that fits your base: Cancún's shops and restaurants, an island visit, or a trip farther into the Riviera Maya. Compare the full pickup-to-return time before choosing a long excursion.
Ask operators about meeting points, admissions, equipment and cancellation terms. For swimming or boat outings, follow local conditions and keep an alternative for days when the sea or weather changes.

Use Cancún as a starting point for Hotel Zone outings and compare Riviera Maya bases from Puerto Morelos toward Tulum for the excursions you want. In either region, a beachfront resort can be a substantial journey from the town in its name.
