Spain All-Inclusive Travel Guide

Spain's all-inclusive scene splits between the year-round-warm Canary Islands off the coast of Africa and the buzzy Costa del Sol on the southern mainland — both sunny, well-priced, and increasingly home to upscale resorts. Here's what to know before you book.

Do you need a visa for Spain?

U.S. and Canadian citizens can visit Spain visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, with a passport valid at least three months beyond your stay.

The EU's new ETIAS travel authorization is set to launch in late 2026 and become required around 2027 — a quick online approval (about €20) valid for multiple trips, not a visa. Check the official EU site (travel-europe.europa.eu) for current timing before you fly.

Is Spain safe?

Spain is a very popular, well-trodden destination; the State Department typically rates it Level 2, 'Exercise Increased Caution,' which here mostly means watching for pickpockets and bag-snatchers in tourist hotspots. The resort areas of the Canary Islands and Costa del Sol are relaxed and safe — keep an eye on your belongings in crowds and you'll be fine. Check travel.state.gov before you go.

Currency and tipping

Spain uses the euro, and tipping is light: round up or leave roughly 5–10% for good service, and a little for housekeeping. Service is often already included, and cards are accepted nearly everywhere.

When to visit

The Canary Islands are a year-round, spring-like escape — their whole trump card. The mainland Costa del Sol is best May through October, with July and August the hottest and busiest months.

Getting there & around

Fly into Tenerife (TFS/TFN) for the Canary Islands or Málaga (AGP) for the Costa del Sol, both well-connected via Madrid and other European hubs. Spain drives on the right; resort transfers handle arrivals, and a car helps if you want to explore Andalucía.

What to do beyond the resort

On the Costa del Sol, day-trip to Granada's Alhambra, the clifftop town of Ronda, glitzy Marbella, or even Gibraltar. In the Canaries, hike Mount Teide (Spain's highest peak), whale-watch offshore, and explore black-sand beaches. Everywhere: long lunches, tapas, and flamenco.

Good to know

Power & plugs: 230V, European Type C/F — bring an adapter. Language: Spanish, with English common in resort areas. Water: tap water is generally safe. Dress: beach-casual, and remember Spaniards dine late — dinner at 9pm is normal.
