  1. Wooden deck with orange cushioned seating overlooks a sandy beach, turquoise water, and jungle-covered cliff at Shangri-La Boracay.

    Shangri-La Boracay Resort & Spa

    Boracay, Philippines
    Five-star4.7 guest rating (3,202)Palmprint 9.3/10From $170/night pp

Tucked on its own private 350m beach at the quiet end of Boracay, Shangri-La balances the island's famous sand with rainforest hillside above. Days swing between CHI spa treatments and ziplines or island-hopping, with fine dining at Solenne. A polished base for one of Asia's best beaches. Best November through March.

  2. Thatched bungalow with wooden deck overlooks green lawn and palm trees toward sunset ocean at Shangri-La Yanuca Island.

    Shangri-La Yanuca Island, Fiji

    Five-star4.4 guest rating (5,532)Palmprint 8.3/10From $177/night pp

Shangri-La Yanuca Island is a big family resort on a private island joined to Viti Levu by a causeway, for families who want island life without a boat. It is about 50 minutes from Nadi's airport, with 443 rooms on 109 acres, four restaurants, two bars, a lagoon, a water park and the Little Chiefs Club for ages four to eleven. It is the family and beach choice against the Denarau hotels, and it comes with the trade-offs of its size. Guests praise the family facilities and the kids' programming, the private-island lagoon setting, and the water park, kayaks and paddleboards. The complaints are rooms that feel dated for the price, food quality and value that vary, and a resort that runs busy in school holidays. The thing people wish they had known is that the all-inclusive package is package-specific: it carries credits and beverage windows rather than unlimited everything, and it is sold through wholesalers rather than as the resort's base rate. The base rate covers Wi-Fi, the kids' club and the non-motorised water sports, with meals a la carte, a full-board plan and a beverage package sold as add-ons; the spa, the minibar, room service, motorised sports and the airport transfer at 170 Fijian dollars per vehicle each way are extra. Read the package terms before comparing it with a true all-inclusive. The Reef Wing is the quieter adults' corner, and the two-bedroom Yanuca Lagoon Bure sleeps a family of six. Couples after intimacy should look to the smaller islands.
