LUX Resorts & Hotels resorts, ranked

  1. Palm trees and lounge chairs surround a reflection pool at LUX* Belle Mare at sunset, with thatched-roof bungalows visible beyond.

    LUX* Belle Mare

    Belle Mare, Mauritius
    Five-star4.7 guest rating (2,380)Palmprint 9.1/10From $161/night pp

LUX* does luxury with a wink, a beach cinema under the stars, street-food pop-ups instead of stuffy buffets, and a genuinely playful mood, all on Mauritius's east coast. The LUX* Me Spa covers wellness. Design-forward without losing the polish. Best April through November.

  2. Aerial view of LUX Grand Gaube's curved pool and sandy beach surrounded by lush tropical vegetation and turquoise lagoon waters.

    LUX Grand Gaube

    Five-star4.6 guest rating (3,457)Palmprint 8.9/10From $225/night pp

LUX Grand Gaube is a design-led resort on Mauritius's north coast, for travellers who want two private coves and restaurants worth dressing for. It is about 75 minutes from the airport, with six restaurants, seven bars, two pools and two beaches of its own, plus the Banyan grown-ups area, which keeps a pool and cove to itself. All-inclusive is a package bought on top of the rate here, and its exclusions are the thing to read. Guests praise the styling and the secluded north-coast setting, the food and the distinctive restaurant concepts, and the two beaches with the lagoon sports off them. The complaints are a package that leaves out some of the best venues, and prices and extras that dent the sense of value. The thing people wish they had known is that INTI, the gin bar and the rum treehouse sit outside the package, so three of the places people come here for are paid separately. The optional all-inclusive package covers breakfast, lunch and dinner at the open restaurants, a selection of wines, beers, cocktails and spirits, a minibar refilled daily, Wi-Fi, the kids' club for ages three to eleven, the spa's sauna, steam and yoga, and the snorkelling, windsurfing, kayaks and Hobie Cats; INTI, the G&T 100 Club and the Rum Tree House are outside it, treatments and the airport transfer are extra, and room service carries a tray charge. Price the package against paying as you go if INTI is on your list. The 70-square-metre Ocean Junior Suite is the view and the 85-square-metre Family Suite has two bedrooms. Anyone who wants a rate with no small print should look at the island's included-plan resorts.
