Mauritius All-Inclusive Travel Guide

Mauritius is the splurge that earns it: powder beaches, turquoise lagoons inside a near-continuous coral reef, and a genuine cultural mix of Indian, African, French and Chinese influences. It's a long haul from the US, but the all-inclusives here lean toward polished and romantic – this is a honeymoon island as much as a beach one.

Do you need a passport or visa for Mauritius?

U.S. citizens need a valid passport but no visa for tourist stays up to 60 days; you'll get a free entry permit on arrival, extendable once for 30 days.

Everyone must complete the free online Mauritius All-in-One Travel digital form within 72 hours before arrival – do it early and print a copy. Confirm the latest rules on travel.state.gov before you fly.

Is Mauritius safe?

Mauritius is a calm, stable place to visit, but in late 2025 the U.S. State Department raised it to Level 2, 'Exercise Increased Caution,' citing a rise in crime.

In practice the concern is petty theft – pickpocketing, bag snatching, things left on the beach. Use the room safe, don't flash valuables, and check the current advisory on travel.state.gov before you go.

Currency and tipping

The local currency is the Mauritian rupee. Cards are accepted at resorts, restaurants and larger shops; carry some rupees for markets, small cafes and taxis.

Tipping isn't obligatory and many resorts add a service charge, but it's appreciated: round up taxis, and leave 5–10% or a small note for good service and helpful staff.

When to visit

Mauritius sits in the southern hemisphere, so seasons are flipped. The sweet spot is the cooler, drier winter from roughly May to December – sunny, comfortable and far less humid.

Summer (January–March) is hotter, wetter and within the cyclone window. It's still beautiful, but rain and the odd storm are more likely.

Getting there & around

You'll fly into Sir Seewoosagar Ramgoolam International (MRU) in the southeast, usually via the Gulf, Europe or South Africa – expect a long trip with at least one connection.

Most visitors rely on resort transfers and taxis; agree the fare first. Mauritius drives on the left, and roads are narrow and busy, so self-driving suits only the confident.

What to do beyond the resort

Snorkel or dive the lagoon, then head inland to Black River Gorges National Park, the surreal seven-coloured earths at Chamarel, and the sacred lake at Grand Bassin.

Catamaran trips to Île aux Cerfs, the lively market at Port Louis, and rum distillery tastings round out an easy itinerary. Big-game fishing and kitesurfing draw the more active.

Good to know

Power is 230V with mostly UK-style Type G plugs, so pack an adapter. Tap water is generally treated, but many visitors stick to bottled. A yellow fever certificate is required only if you're arriving from a risk country.

English and French are both widely spoken alongside Creole, so communication is easy.
