Heritance Hotels & Resorts resorts, ranked

  1. Beachfront resort with multi-story white building, palm trees, pool with thatched umbrella, and sandy beach stretching to calm ocean water under blue sky.

    Sentido Heritance Negombo

    Five-star4.7 guest rating (8,915)Palmprint 8.3/10From $174/night pp

Sentido Heritance Negombo is a beachfront five-star 25 minutes from Colombo's airport, and its best use is the first or last night of a Sri Lanka trip. It has 139 rooms, a pool above the beach and five restaurants, with the town walkable from the gate. All-inclusive is a rate plan some channels sell rather than the hotel's own product, and the sea here is rough enough that the pool does the swimming. Guests praise the breakfast and the buffet, a beach location this close to the airport, and the friendly restaurant staff. The complaints are all-inclusive terms that are not clear, limited entertainment, and sea conditions that rule out swimming much of the time. The thing people wish they had known is that this is a beachside airport-area hotel rather than a closed-gate resort, and that the board basis needs checking before booking. Where a rate carries all-inclusive, confirm which of the five restaurants and which drinks it covers, because the hotel's own materials treat the restaurants and the culinary specials as paid rather than bundled; the spa, room service, gratuities and the airport transfer are extra. Use it as a polished bookend when flight times are awkward, and choose a higher view category for anything longer than a night. The Premium Room is the view without suite money, and the Deluxe Room is the one-night value. Families needing a kids' club should look down the coast.

  2. A wooden fishing boat sits in the center of a large turquoise pool at Heritance Ahungalla, with cream and orange colonial-style buildings surrounding the courtyard.

    Heritance Ahungalla

    Five-star4.7 guest rating (11,677)Palmprint 8.2/10From $300/night pp

Heritance Ahungalla is a landmark beachfront hotel on Sri Lanka's south-west coast, for travellers who want a heritage building on the sand. All-inclusive is an option rather than the rule. It is about two hours from Colombo's airport, with 152 rooms that all face the ocean, two pools, three restaurants and three bars, and a design that belongs to the island's modernist tradition rather than to any resort chain. It is a hotel with a beach, not a resort complex. Guests praise the beachfront setting and the ocean-facing rooms, the two-pool layout, the food and the buffet variety, and the friendliness of the service. The complaints are that the all-inclusive rules depend on the rate plan, that extras outside the package can feel costly, and that the building's age shows in some rooms. The thing people wish they had known is that all-inclusive is one rate among several here and not the default, and that there is no water park or broad kids' club programme. The plan, where a rate carries it, covers the restaurant meals and Wi-Fi, with the a la carte access rules set at booking and premium imported spirits limited; the spa, 24-hour room service and the airport transfer are extra, and the two-hour drive is worth booking as a private car. Compare all-inclusive, half board and breakfast-only before choosing, because the value depends on how much you will eat on site. The Luxury Suite is the most space in an ocean-facing room. Families needing a kids' club should look elsewhere.
