Sri Lanka is the rare beach week that comes with a country attached: golden south-coast sand and warm Indian Ocean water on one side, and tea-terraced hills, leopard safaris, and 2,000-year-old cities a few hours inland on the other. All-inclusive is a smaller slice here than in the Maldives (the island leans boutique bed-and-breakfast), but the larger beach resorts that do run it pair a low daily cost with the most varied two-week trip in the region.

South coast or east coast?

The southwest and south coasts hold most of the resort supply: Bentota and Beruwala for the classic beach strip, the fort town of Galle for character, and Tangalle and Weligama for wider, quieter sand. This is the side to book from December to March, when the water is glassy and the sky is dry.

The east coast (Trincomalee, Passikudah, Nilaveli) runs on the opposite calendar: its sea turns calm and clear from May to September, exactly when the south is under the southwest monsoon. Picking the right coast for your dates matters more here than almost anywhere; our resort pages note which coast each property sits on.

When to go

There is no single best month for the whole island, only the best coast for your month. December to March is prime for the south and west; May to September is prime for the east. April and October are the inter-monsoon turns: hot, humid, and changeable, but often cheap and quiet. Whichever coast you choose, the other one is likely raining, so build the trip around one side.

Beyond the beach

This is where Sri Lanka pulls ahead of a pure beach destination. Leopard and elephant safaris at Yala and Udawalawe are a half-day from the south coast; the hill-country tea estates around Ella and Nuwara Eliya are a scenic train ride inland; and the Cultural Triangle (Sigiriya's rock fortress, the ancient capitals, Kandy's temple) rounds out a classic one-week-beach, one-week-touring split.

Good to know

Most visitors need an ETA (electronic travel authorization) before arrival. Tuk-tuks and private drivers are the way to get around; roads are slow, so plan distances by hours, not kilometers. Tap water is not for drinking. Dress modestly at temples (covered shoulders and knees, shoes off). The food is a genuine highlight, so even on an all-inclusive plan, leave room for a rice-and-curry spread and fresh seafood.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to visit Sri Lanka?

It depends on the coast. The south and west coasts are best December to March; the east coast is best May to September. The two monsoons hit the two sides in opposite seasons, so choose the coast that matches your travel dates rather than looking for one perfect month.

Is all-inclusive common in Sri Lanka?

Less than in the Maldives: the island leans toward boutique bed-and-breakfast stays, while the larger beach resorts on the south and east coasts are where all-inclusive plans concentrate. If the plan matters, filter for it specifically; our resort pages show what each property includes.
