The Zanzibar Collection resorts, ranked

  1. White Moorish-style building with arched openings and upper balcony surrounded by tall palm trees and manicured lawn at Baraza Resort & Spa.

    Baraza Resort & Spa

    Bwejuu Beach, Zanzibar, Tanzania
    Five-star4.7 guest rating (349)Palmprint 8.9/10From $406/night pp

A small adults-only place on Zanzibar's coast done up in Swahili-palace style, carved arches and Arab baths at the Frangipani spa. It's built for couples: dinners on the beach under the stars, dhow cruises at sunset, and some of the Indian Ocean's best diving right offshore. Quiet, romantic, and a little theatrical in the best way.

  2. Thatched-roof pavilion with blue curtains surrounded by palm trees, flowering plants, and a small pool at The Palms Zanzibar.

    The Palms Zanzibar

    Five-star5.0 guest rating (61)From $329/night pp

The Palms is a seven-villa all-inclusive on Zanzibar's east coast, for couples who want privacy rather than choice. There is one restaurant, there are two pools, and every villa has a plunge pool of its own across 140 square metres with two bathrooms. The white sand at Bwejuu is the setting, the east coast's tides decide when it is swimmable, and the transfer from the airport is arranged and paid separately. Guests praise the privacy and the quiet, the villas and their plunge pools, the service, the food and the romance of the place. The complaints are the price, almost no nightlife, the limited variety that one restaurant means over a week, and the tides. The thing people wish they had known is that the resort is deliberately tiny, so the value comes from wanting privacy and not from wanting a resort's worth of facilities. The plan covers breakfast, lunch and dinner at the one restaurant along with drinks and Wi-Fi, and guests may use sister-property facilities under the resort's own rules; the Sanctuary Spa, the diving, the snorkelling and windsurfing, and the transfer at about 75 US dollars per vehicle each way are extra, and room service and premium bottles are not spelled out. Confirm what the sister properties actually open to you before counting on them for variety. The Luxury Villa is effectively the only category, and it is the whole product. Families with young children, and anyone who wants a choice of restaurants, should look at the larger resorts in the same collection.
