Villa Resorts resorts, ranked

  1. Overwater bungalows with peaked thatched roofs line turquoise lagoon waters at Villa Nautica, each with wooden decks and hot tubs.

    Villa Nautica, Maldives

    Five-star4.9 guest rating (19,352)Palmprint 8.8/10From $244/night pp

Villa Nautica is a family-friendly island resort in North Male Atoll, for people who want the Maldives without a seaplane and with a plan they can choose. It is a speedboat of about 20 minutes from the airport, which runs at any hour, and that convenience is the resort's first argument. The second is scale: 282 rooms, seven restaurants and a kids' club, on an island with more going on than the honeymoon resorts further out. Guests praise the short transfer, the lagoon and the private-island feel, the kids' club and the family room options, and the breadth of dining. The complaints are that the standard all-inclusive can feel limited against the premium plan, that some rooms are older than the renovated villas, and that parts of the island are livelier than a quiet resort. The thing people wish they had known is that all-inclusive here is a meal plan you select rather than the rate, and that the premium tier and the dine-around upgrade are where the a la carte restaurants open up. The standard all-inclusive plan covers the main buffet with selected a la carte benefits on qualifying stays, a daily minibar refill and snorkelling gear; the spa is discounted rather than included, and the speedboat is a mandatory charge of about 185 US dollars per adult and 98 per child, return. The Deluxe Beach Pool Villa is the renovated category worth choosing for room freshness. Couples who want silence should look to the outer atolls.

  2. Wooden pavilion with white curtains draped from beams, massage tables with rolled towels, and lush tropical plants surrounding the spa area.

    Villa Park, Maldives

    Five-star4.7 guest rating (5,246)Palmprint 8.5/10From $188/night pp

Villa Park is a large family island in South Ari Atoll, for families who want whale sharks, a long beach and a Maldives price that works. Getting there takes about two and a half hours by domestic flight and boat, and it is one of the biggest island resorts in the country, with 462 rooms, five restaurants, four bars and a lagoon to snorkel. The all-inclusive plan comes in three tiers, and the tier decides what the week is. Guests praise the size of the island and its beaches, the staff, the whale-shark and snorkelling access, and the range of things for families to do. The complaints are a standard plan that limits the a la carte restaurants, older rooms in some categories, and a scale that costs the resort its intimacy. The thing people wish they had known is that standard All Inclusive is not Premium or Infinity, and that the room category matters because renovated and unrenovated inventory feel like different hotels. The standard All Inclusive plan covers the buffet meals, a limited a la carte allowance on qualifying stays, selected wines, beers, spirits and cocktails, a daily minibar refill, snorkelling gear and sunset fishing on qualifying stays, with discounts rather than inclusion on the spa and the diving; the transfer by domestic flight and speedboat is extra, and so are the motorised water sports. Compare the three plans before booking, because dining access is what changes between them. The Beach Villa is the value room, the Deluxe Beach Pool Villa is the freshest, and the Two Bedroom Family Beach Villa sleeps six. Couples who want a small island should look nearer Male.
