Crete All-Inclusive Travel Guide

Crete is Greece's all-inclusive heavyweight — an island big enough to be its own country, with the luxury coves of Elounda in the east, the long sandy north-coast beaches around Chania and Rethymno in the west, mountains that hold snow into spring, and four thousand years of history (Knossos, Minoans, Venetian ports) between them. The resorts get Greek food and light; the hurricane forecast stays empty.

East or west Crete?

Elounda, on the east's Mirabello Bay, is Greece's most concentrated luxury-resort address — calm water, private jetties, and the island's flagship properties. The Heraklion–Hersonissos stretch nearby is the high-volume family zone. West, Rethymno and Chania trade luxury density for Crete's best long sandy beaches and two of the prettiest Venetian old towns in Greece.

Distances are real — Chania to Elounda is three hours — so pick your coast first and your resort second.

When to go

The season runs long: swimmable from May into October. July–August brings the heat, the meltemi wind, and peak crowds; June and September deliver the same sea with breathing room. No tropical weather exists here — the reliability that makes Greece the smart August–October alternative to the Caribbean.

Beyond the resort

Knossos and the Heraklion museum for the Minoans, Spinalonga's leper-colony island off Elounda, the Samaria Gorge hike, Balos and Elafonissi's famous beaches in the far west, and tavernas everywhere — Cretan food (and the island's olive oil) is the best eating in the Greek islands.
