Crete is Greece's all-inclusive heavyweight: an island big enough to be its own country, with the luxury coves of Elounda and Agios Nikolaos in the east, the long sandy north-coast beaches around Rethymno and Chania in the west, mountains that hold snow into spring, and four thousand years of history between them. It also runs a longer season at both ends than the rest of Greece manages, which is why a May or October week here is a safer bet than on the smaller islands.

East or west Crete for an all-inclusive?

East, around Elounda and Agios Nikolaos, for the island's luxury resorts on sheltered coves, served by Heraklion. West, along the north coast from Rethymno to Chania, for long sandy beaches, real towns and better value, served by Chania or Heraklion. Both have the Cretan food that makes the island's plans worth eating.

How long is the season in Crete?

May to October, with June and September the sweet spots. July and August are hottest and busiest. Crete's south-eastern position gives it a longer shoulder season than the Cyclades or Corfu, so the early and late weeks are the ones it wins.

When is the best time to visit Crete?

The sweet spot is June and September; July–August is hottest and busiest. The rainy season runs November–February. No tropical systems: dry Mediterranean summers, every year.
