Crete is Greece's family heavyweight: the Heraklion to Hersonissos stretch is the island's high-volume family zone, with big resorts, aqua parks and a short run from the airport, and the north coast west to Rethymno and Chania adds the island's best long sandy beaches. Frequently asked questions

Which part of Crete is best for families?

The Heraklion to Hersonissos stretch for the biggest family resorts and the shortest transfer, and the Rethymno coast for long sandy beaches with a Venetian town behind them. Elounda in the east is the luxury address and quieter for children. Distances are real, so pick the coast first.

How long is Crete's family season?

May to October, with June and September the sweet spots. Crete's position gives it a longer shoulder season than the smaller islands, so a half-term trip in late May or October is a safer bet here than anywhere else in Greece.
