Montego Bay vs Negril

Every Jamaica trip starts with this fork. Montego Bay is the practical choice: resorts minutes from the airport, golf, reef-calm coves, a real town. Negril is the romantic one: the island's greatest beach and its most laid-back rhythm, paid for with a 75–90 minute transfer each way. Same island, same brands, genuinely different weeks.

Round by round

Round 1
The beach

Negril, and it isn't close: Seven Mile is Jamaica's best sand and among the Caribbean's best, calm and swimmable end to end. MoBay's coves are pretty; they're not this.

Round 2
Convenience

Montego Bay, overwhelmingly: 10–30 minutes from MBJ versus Negril's 75–90. Red-eye arrivals, short trips, and toddler math all point here.

Round 3
Vibe

Negril is barefoot and low-rise with a sunset ritual every night; MoBay is busier, golfier, more buttoned-up. Pick the temperament, not the brochure.

Round 4
Things to do

MoBay: golf, Rose Hall, Luminous Lagoon, the Hip Strip, plus day-trip reach to Ocho Rios' falls. Negril's list is shorter because the beach is the activity.

Round 5
Resort choice

MoBay has more properties across more price points; Negril's supply is smaller but includes some of the island's most loved resorts.

Of the 3 measures we call, Montego Bay leads on 2 and Negril leads on 1.

The verdict

Close call

Three nights or less, golf on the agenda, or a hatred of transfer vans: Montego Bay. Five-plus nights built around beach and sunset: Negril, without hesitation; the transfer stings once in each direction and pays off every day between. The split-stay (first and last night in MoBay, the middle in Negril) is the connoisseur's answer for longer trips.
