Costa del Sol
The Costa del Sol is Spain's mainland all-inclusive coast: a continuous run of beach towns west from Málaga, from Torremolinos and Benalmádena through Marbella to Estepona, with Andalusia behind it. The beaches are grey-sand and city-adjacent, which is the trade for everything else being nearby: Granada's Alhambra, Seville, the clifftop town of Ronda and even Gibraltar are all a day trip. Pick it if you want a real country around the resort rather than an island.

Where on the coast?
The coast reads west from the airport. Torremolinos and Benalmádena are the closest, the most built-up, and the best value: long promenades, a marina, and resorts you can reach in twenty minutes. Marbella is the polished middle, with the old town, Puerto Banús and the coast's upscale properties. Estepona, furthest west, is quieter, lower-rise and has kept more of its town, with the newest luxury all-inclusives on its beach.
Nowhere on this coast is remote. A motorway runs behind every strip, which is what makes the day trips easy and what makes the beaches feel urban.
When to go
May through October, with June and September the sweet spots. July and August are hot, busy and priced for it, though the sea is at its warmest. The Costa del Sol has milder winters than most of Europe and the resorts stay open, but the sea is cold and the sun is for terraces rather than beaches; for a winter beach the Canaries are the Spanish answer.
Beyond the resort
This is the coast's argument. Granada's Alhambra needs a timed ticket booked well ahead and is worth the two-hour drive. Ronda, on its gorge, is closer and makes an easy day with lunch. Seville is a long day or a night away. Málaga itself has the Picasso museum and a proper old town twenty minutes from the closest resorts, and Gibraltar is a curious afternoon from the western end.
