Maldives Outer Atolls
The outer atolls are the Maldives most people picture: a seaplane banking over rings of reef, one island with one resort on it and nothing else on the horizon. They cost a second transfer to reach, by seaplane or by a domestic flight and a boat, and that transfer is the whole decision. Pay it and you get the country's most storied house reefs, the manta and whale-shark grounds, and a seclusion the Malé atolls cannot offer with the capital in view. The northern atolls
Baa, Raa, Noonu and Lhaviyani: Baa is a UNESCO biosphere reserve with the Hanifaru Bay manta gathering, Lhaviyani has the strongest house reefs in the catalog, and Raa and Noonu hold the newest islands. Several have a domestic airport, which is what makes an evening arrival workable.

The transfer is the decision
Every resort past the Malé atolls is reached one of two ways. The seaplane is the famous one: a Twin Otter from a terminal beside the international airport, flying in daylight only, with a flight of under an hour to the Ari and northern atolls and a bill of several hundred dollars a person, return. The domestic flight is the quieter alternative: a scheduled jet or turboprop to an atoll airstrip, then a speedboat to the island, which runs after dark and usually costs less. Which one your island offers is fixed by geography, so it belongs at the top of the shortlist, not the bottom.
The seaplane's daylight rule has a consequence worth planning around: an evening landing at Malé means a night at an airport hotel before the morning flight out, and the same again on the way home if your departure is early. Atolls with a domestic airport (Baa, Raa, Noonu, Lhaviyani, Dhaalu and the deep south all have one) avoid that. Resorts book the transfer for you and add it to the bill; the plan rarely includes it, so ask for the figure before you compare rates.
Which atoll
The Ari atolls, west of Malé, are the second-visit standard: North Ari for channel diving and South Ari for the whale sharks that patrol its southern edge in every month of the year. The northern atolls are where the marine reserves are. Baa is a UNESCO biosphere reserve, and Hanifaru Bay, inside it, draws one of the world's largest manta gatherings through the southwest monsoon. Lhaviyani's islands sit on the atoll rim with house reefs you snorkel from the beach, and Raa and Noonu hold the newest and some of the most lavish islands in the country.
Dhaalu and Meemu, south of the Malé atolls, are where the large modern family resorts went, priced for a week rather than a honeymoon. The Gaafu atolls in the deep south are the far end of the map: almost on the equator, reached by a domestic flight of about an hour, with the emptiest lagoons the Maldives has and dive channels that the day boats from Malé cannot reach.
When to go
January through March is the dry season proper: the northeast monsoon, calm lagoons and the best visibility. May through November is the southwest monsoon, warmer, wetter in short bursts, and the season the mantas come for. Whale sharks in South Ari do not keep a season. There are no cyclones this close to the equator, and the far south, straddling it, has seasons less marked than the north's. Weather risk here is a rainy afternoon, not a storm.
The all-inclusive math, with a second transfer
On an outer-atoll island the resort is the only restaurant, bar and shop for many miles, and the plan is the only thing between you and à-la-carte pricing that is famously steep. A genuine all-inclusive plan, with the à-la-carte venues, the drinks and the non-motorised water sports inside it, usually beats pay-as-you-go by a wide margin. Two things sit outside almost every plan: the transfer, and motorised excursions, which is where the manta and whale-shark trips live. Price those before you decide between two islands, because a cheaper room on a seaplane atoll is often the dearer week.
