Egypt's all-inclusives line the Red Sea, and the Red Sea is the most weather-proof beach on this site: almost no rain, sunshine near enough guaranteed, and warm, clear water over some of the best coral on the planet. Sharm el-Sheikh on the Sinai side has reef walls a few metres off the shore. Hurghada on the mainland has sandy beaches and the cheapest flights and rooms. The bays either side of it, Makadi, Soma, Sahl Hasheesh and El Gouna, are calmer and self-contained, and Marsa Alam to the south has the least developed coast and the reefs to match.

Sharm for the snorkelling and diving: the reef walls are right off the shore and the water is the calmest and clearest in the country, though many beaches are coral rather than sand. Hurghada for value and sandy beaches, with the bays either side of it if you want a quieter sweep of sand at mainland prices.

When is the best time for an Egyptian beach holiday?

October to May is the sweet spot. High summer is very hot, but it is dry and the sea is warm, so it still works for people who plan to be in the water. There is effectively no rainy season to plan around.
