Egypt's mainland Red Sea coast holds most of the country's all-inclusive supply and runs to three different holidays: Hurghada's sandy beaches and aqua-park resorts at the lowest prices on the Red Sea, the purpose-built bays either side of it, Sahl Hasheesh, Makadi and Soma, each a calm sweep of sand with a handful of resorts and nothing outside, and Marsa Alam four hours south with the least developed coast and the best diving in Egypt. Sun is near enough guaranteed and there is effectively no rain.

    Steigenberger Resort Alaya is an adults-only all-inclusive on the Red Sea at Marsa Alam, for couples who want the reef and a swim-up room. The plan covers nearly everything, the transfer of about 10 minutes is as short as one gets in Egypt, and the resort sits on a stretch of coast where it is the only thing there is. The reef is the reason to come; a town to walk to is not on offer.

    JAZ Makadina is a 270-room resort on the Red Sea at Makadi Bay, and it is smaller and calmer than the megaresorts either side of it. The beach mixes sand for swimming with coral you can snorkel from the shore, which is the main reason to be here and a reason to pack reef shoes. Two pools, one heated for winter and one for children, plus free access to the Makadi Water World park next door, which is where the family case is made.

    Baron Palace sits on the Red Sea at Sahl Hasheesh, a purpose-built bay south of Hurghada that is quieter than the town's nightlife strips. Frequently asked questions

Hurghada town or one of the bays?

Town for value, sandy family resorts and a bit of life outside the gates. The bays for a quieter beach at the same flight prices, with Sahl Hasheesh the most polished. Marsa Alam for divers and anyone who wants a coast that has barely been built on, at the cost of nothing to do but the reef.

Can you get to Luxor from Hurghada?

Yes, and it is the day trip that sets this coast apart from Sharm: about four hours each way by road for the Valley of the Kings and Karnak. Long, but resorts arrange it daily and many guests do it once.

When is the best time to visit Hurghada and the Red Sea coast?

The sweet spot is October–May; high summer is very hot but dry, and the sea is at its warmest. The rainy season runs None to speak of. No tropical systems and effectively no rain; the mainland coast is windier than Sharm, which the kitesurfers come for.
