Indonesia All-Inclusive Travel Guide

Bali earns the hype: emerald rice terraces, surf and dive sites, temples on sea cliffs, and a spa-and-smoothie wellness culture that suits a resort holiday perfectly. Indonesia is vast and far from the US, but Bali concentrates the magic into one island that's endlessly easy to fall for.

Do you need a passport or visa for Indonesia?

U.S. citizens need a Visa on Arrival for tourism: get it at the airport or, easier, as an e-VOA online before you fly. The fee is IDR 500,000 (about $35), good for 30 days and extendable once. Your passport must be valid six-plus months with two blank pages.

You also complete the free Electronic Customs Declaration (ECD) within 72 hours of arrival for a QR code. Confirm current rules on travel.state.gov.

Is Indonesia safe?

Indonesia carries a Level 2 advisory, 'Exercise Increased Caution,' largely for terrorism and natural-disaster risk nationwide; the Papua provinces are a separate Level 4 'Do Not Travel' and are nowhere near Bali.

Bali itself is among the country's most tourist-friendly areas. The realistic concerns are petty theft, scooter accidents, and strong surf. Check travel.state.gov before you go.

Currency and tipping

The rupiah comes in big numbers – 'IDR 100,000' is roughly $6–7. Cards work at resorts and larger restaurants, but markets, warungs, and drivers want cash, so carry some. Don't forget the Bali tourist levy of IDR 150,000 (about $10), paid once via the official Love Bali site or app.

Tipping is gracious but not required: a 5–10% service charge is often built in; otherwise round up and leave small change.

When to visit

Bali's dry season, roughly April to October, brings the best beach and dive conditions and the high-season crowds of July and August. May, June, and September are a lovely balance of good weather and smaller crowds.

The wet season (November to March) is humid with afternoon downpours, but it's greener and quieter, with lower rates.

Getting there & around

Fly into Ngurah Rai / Denpasar (DPS), typically connecting through an Asian or Middle East hub. Prebook a resort transfer or use the airport's official taxi counter.

Indonesia drives on the left. Most visitors get around by private driver or ride-hailing apps (Grab, Gojek); traffic in the south can be slow, so build in extra time.

What to do beyond the resort

See the Tegalalang rice terraces and Ubud's art and monkey forest, watch sunset at clifftop Uluwatu temple, and chase waterfalls in the highlands. Surfers and divers are spoiled – Nusa Penida and Menjangan are bucket-list.

Book a Balinese massage or flower-bath spa day; it's a local art form.

Good to know

Power: 230V, Type C/F – pack an adapter. Water: drink bottled, and skip ice from unknown sources. Sarongs are required at many temples (often provided).

Bali is Hindu and deeply ceremonial – step around the small daily offerings on sidewalks, and dress respectfully at temples and villages.
