Sandals vs Club Med
Club Med invented the category in 1950; Sandals wrote the modern couples version of it in 1981. Both are originals, and neither has drifted much from its founding idea, which makes this an unusually clean comparison: one brand thinks a vacation is something you do, the other thinks it's something you stop doing.
Club Med includes group lessons in sailing, tennis, skiing and the flying trapeze, runs kids' clubs by age band, and follows you to the Mediterranean, the Indian Ocean, Asia and the Alps. Sandals includes the things that make a Caribbean week frictionless (dining, top-shelf pours, scuba, transfers, tips) and keeps children out entirely. The overlap is a beach and a bar tab.

Round by round
Barely comparable, which is the point. Sandals is adults-only couples. Club Med is mostly all ages and does families as a core competency, with some adults-only spaces. Kids in the party settles this outright.
Club Med, decisively. Real group instruction across a long sports list, included, with the trapeze as the signature nobody has bothered to copy. Sandals includes non-motorized water sports and scuba for certified divers, which is generous, but there is no teaching culture behind it.
Sandals. Unlimited a la carte across many restaurants and premium-label pours are the brand's spine. Club Med's food is good and has improved, but wine and beer with meals plus a solid open bar is a different promise from top-shelf everything.
Club Med, by a mile. Caribbean and Mexico, yes, but also Greece, Italy, the Maldives, Mauritius, Asia, and an entire ski portfolio in the Alps. Sandals is eight Caribbean islands, deliberately.
Club Med, for the same reason. Sandals is a warm-weather Caribbean product year-round; Club Med is the only brand here where an all-inclusive week in the snow is an option.
Genuinely different rooms. Sandals is couples-dense, mostly American, British and Canadian, and quiet by design. Club Med is international (expect French alongside English), convivial, and organized around G.O. hosts keeping the social temperature up. Introverts should note which is which.
Sandals. You know what a Sandals is before you arrive, and the inclusion list barely varies by property. Club Med's trident tiers matter enormously: a three-trident village and an Exclusive Collection resort are different products, and some signatures (baby club, scuba, spa) cost extra at many villages.
The verdict
Choose Sandals when the trip is about the two of you and the ideal day involves deciding nothing: a honeymoon, an anniversary, a Caribbean week where the food and the drinks should be handled and no children should be audible. Choose Club Med when someone in the party would use ten included sports, when kids need to be genuinely occupied rather than tolerated, or when the destination isn't Caribbean at all, which rules Sandals out before the comparison starts. The one caution on Club Med: check the trident tier and the specific village's extras list, because the brand name promises less about the property than the Sandals name does.
