Hotel Guarana, now branded 3HB Guarana, is a four-star all-inclusive at Olhos de Agua in the central Algarve, and it is built around water. Five pools: two main outdoor ones, two for children, one indoor and heated, plus the Tiki Splash Park with slides and jets for ages four to fifteen. The kids club takes four to twelve and there is a playground alongside. Guests rate the pools, the cleanliness and the staff, in that order.
Four buffet restaurants cover international, oriental, Mediterranean and snack service, with four bars, and the specialty dinners depend on occupancy and need booking, which is the most common frustration here. The bar list runs to wine, beer, cocktails, local spirits and Portuguese liqueurs; imported premium spirits are not something we could evidence, so do not count on a particular bottle. The spa area and gym come with the room while massages and treatments are charged. Two practical facts: the resort is not beachfront, though Praia dos Olhos de Agua is close by, and it closes from the middle of November until late March.
Our sample puts a night at 247 dollars for two, which is a modest price for a resort with this much water in it, and the family maths is what makes it work: rooms run from 21 square metres up to interconnecting pairs at 42, with family and suite categories in between. Faro airport is about thirty-five minutes away and the transfer is extra. Book it for the pools and the children, and expect a short walk or a drive to the sand.
