The east and south coasts: the tide decides
The east coast runs from Matemwe and Kiwengwa down through Pwani Mchangani, Pongwe, Uroa, Marumbi and Dongwe. At low tide the sea retreats a long way across sand and seagrass; at high tide it is a calm turquoise lagoon inside the reef. Check the tide table before planning a swim, and plan on the pool for the hours in between.
The Mora Zanzibar in Matemwe and Meliá Zanzibar in Kiwengwa both record calm swimming water. Most of the others read Varies, which is the tide at work. The Residence Zanzibar in Kizimkazi and Reef & Beach in Jambiani are on the south coast, and Sea Cliff Resort & Spa in Mangapwani is the one west-coast resort, closest to Stone Town.
