Italy's all-inclusives live on its two big islands, and each makes a different case. Sicily is a country's worth of island: Greek temples, Etna, Baroque towns and the best food in the Mediterranean, with the resorts spread around the north and east coasts and Cefalù's golden crescent the pick of the beaches. Sicily or Sardinia for an all-inclusive?

Sicily when the beach is only half the point: temples, Etna, Baroque towns and the food are all within a day of the resorts. Sardinia for the swimming, with coves and water that stay beautiful even in August, at a higher price and with much less to do inland.

When is the best time for a beach holiday in Italy?

June and September. July and August are hot, busy and priced accordingly, though Sardinia's water is at its best then. October brings the first rain, and the season on both islands winds down by then.
