Atacama or Patagonia?
The Atacama, the driest desert on Earth, is the northern option: salt flats and flamingo lagoons, geyser fields at dawn, Mars-like valleys, and some of the clearest night skies anywhere, all reached on day trips from lodges around San Pedro de Atacama. It runs year-round and pairs easily with a night in Santiago.
Patagonia and Torres del Paine are the southern epic: the granite towers, guanacos and pumas, glacier-fed lakes, and the famous W and full-circuit hikes, based from lodges near the park. It is seasonal (roughly October to April) and further to reach, but it is the landscape people cross the planet for.
When to go
The Atacama is a year-round destination; the main variable is altitude, so winter nights (June–August) are cold and clear while days stay bright. Patagonia follows the Southern Hemisphere seasons: the lodges open roughly October to April, with December to February the warmest, longest-daylight, and busiest window, and the shoulder months quieter and famously windy. Book Patagonia well ahead; the good lodges are small and sell out.
What the lodges include
The all-inclusive lodge here bundles accommodation, all meals and (usually) drinks, a rotating slate of guided excursions to choose from each day, and the airport or town transfers at each end. That is the whole point of the format: you arrive, hand over the logistics, and let expert guides match the day's outing to your energy and the weather. It is a different product from a Caribbean resort, and priced accordingly.
Good to know
Most visitors reach both regions via Santiago, so a domestic connection is part of the plan. The Atacama sits at altitude (San Pedro is around 2,400m, excursions climb far higher), so ease into the first day. Patagonia's weather changes by the hour and the wind is legendary; pack layers and a real shell. Currency is the Chilean peso; lodges bill in dollars or by card. These are excursion-led trips, so come to move, not to lie by a pool.
