Guest Reviews
Diani Reef has a great location by the beach but the resort is very poorly managed. We had several hiccups right from the time we checked in. We had reserved the premium sea rooms but they had forgot to allocate that for us. To their credit, they alloted the junior suite for us which is sea facing.....
Diani Reef is a heartbreak of a property. The location is world-class, but the resort itself is badly maintained and falling apart. The Good: The staff are the only reason this place functions. They are exceptional, hardworking, and kind, but they are clearly stretched way too thin by management. ...
We were scared off by some of the reviews for an overnight stay. So we arrived mid-morning to get a day pass to check it out as we really just wanted a place to park ourselves for a day. On check-in we were told we can use beach but not pool because the resort was full. Pool is relatively small f...
We have stayed here for 7 days, all inclusive (full bord). The hotel needs upgrades regarding the rooms (old and used-up furniture), especially in the bathrooms (very old and rusted amenities - sink batteris, showers, wood dors etc). There was no hairdryer in the room. The beach towels were old & to...
Great if you are looking for a day pass private beach. This is a true private beach where your belongings will be looked after and you can enjoy the beach without being bothered. It also includes a buffer style lunch that has good choices

What it does best
- Direct beachfront position on Diani Beach with white sand and Indian Ocean views.
- Strong family-friendly amenity set, including children's club, children's pool, supervised activities, babysitting options, and playground-style features.
- Good activity depth for the area, including snorkeling, scuba, boat tours, windsurfing, water skiing, parasailing, bicycle rental, and evening entertainment.
- Free in-room Wi-Fi, coworking space, meeting rooms, business center, and laptop-friendly workspaces support light remote work better than many beach resorts.
- Staff friendliness and helpfulness are a recurring positive theme across multiple guest sources.
Where it costs you
- Rooms and some public areas receive recurring criticism for dated decor, maintenance issues, and a tired feel.
- Service can be friendly but slow, especially around restaurants, check-in, and issue resolution.
- Spa services are officially suspended during renovation until further notice.
- Food feedback is mixed, with praise for buffet variety but recurring complaints about repetition, temperature, service speed, or value.
- The resort can be noisy during entertainment periods, and some guests do not experience the quiet beach escape they expected.
What else the research turned up
Things to know before you book
- Diani Reef Beach Resort & Spa sits directly on Diani Beach, one of Kenya's strongest beach destinations, and the beachfront setting is the resort's clearest strength.
- The resort markets itself as a five-star beachfront hotel, but guest feedback is mixed on whether the room condition and overall polish consistently match five-star expectations.
- The official site states the Maya Spa is temporarily suspended for renovations until further notice, so spa services should be verified before booking.
- The resort has 143 rooms and suites, plus family-friendly amenities including a free children's club, children's pool, playground-style facilities, and supervised children's activities.
- All-inclusive rates are available, but the resort also appears through platforms with different board options, so inclusions should be checked carefully before booking.
- Beach conditions can vary by tide, and some guest feedback mentions sea urchins or difficult swimming at certain times, so reef shoes and local guidance can be useful.
Hidden tips
- Ask for a higher-floor or ocean-facing room at check-in if views and quiet are important.
- Verify the current spa status directly with the resort before booking a wellness-focused stay.
- Use the beach location and nearby Diani restaurants as part of the trip rather than relying entirely on resort dining.
- Families should confirm kids club hours and supervised activity availability for the specific travel dates.
- If swimming is a priority, ask staff about tide timing, safe entry points, and whether reef shoes are recommended.

Things people wish they had known
- The beach and setting are stronger than the room product.
- The resort may be a better fit for travelers prioritizing Diani Beach access and value than travelers expecting polished international five-star luxury.
- Room assignment matters because view, floor level, and maintenance condition can materially affect the stay.
- Swimming conditions can vary with tides and reef/sea-urchin conditions.
- The spa should not be treated as guaranteed until the resort confirms reopening after renovation.
From Reddit
Direct recent Reddit evidence for this specific resort was limited during research; broader Diani Beach travel discussion generally treats the area as a strong beach destination where resort condition, beach access, and off-property dining choices matter.
Room intelligence
- Best Views
- Higher-floor partial sea-view or ocean-facing categoriesGuest feedback and official room descriptions point to outdoor views of Diani Beach and the Indian Ocean as a meaningful advantage when room placement is favorable.
- Rooms To Avoid
- Ground-floor back rooms or older-feeling rooms if view, quiet, and room condition are prioritiesRecent guest feedback repeatedly mentions dated decor, maintenance issues, mustiness, and room-condition variation; some older TripAdvisor comments also note better satisfaction after moving from lower/back rooms to higher partial sea-view placement.
- Best Value Room
- Deluxe or Premium room categoriesThese categories preserve access to Diani Beach, pools, dining, kids facilities, and resort activities while avoiding the highest suite pricing.
- Best Room Category
- Superior Suite, Junior Suite, Penthouse Suite, or Presidential SuiteOfficial room materials identify the suite categories as the resort's premium accommodation options, with larger layouts, separate lounge areas, Jacuzzi-style bathrooms in some categories, and stronger beach or ocean-view potential.
